Frictional States & Bouncing Borders

The next event of De Facto will be held in De Roode Bioscoop, Amsterdam, on January 16, 2020. Our guests will be Wladimir van Wilgenburg (political analyst, Kurdistan), Irene Stracuzzi (graphic designer, Arctic) and Pierre Crom (multimedia journalist, Donbass region).

According to the United Nations, there are 193 countries on earth. However, there is no rule to say what exactly makes a state. A president, a flag, a government? The reality is a lot more unruly. De Facto explores the realm of unrecognized states, fictional countries and curious border zones.

On 16 January 2020, there will be a live version of our platform defactoborders.org. We will interview Wladimir van Wilgenburg, a political analyst who writes from and about the heated region of Kurdistan. He will give us some insight into the complexity of current events. Designer Irene Stracuzzi wonders who is planting flags on the Arctic and gives a presentation about her intriguing work. Multimedia journalist Pierre Crom, who extensively covered the annexation of Crimea and the conflict in eastern-Ukraine, will show us with his photographs how conflicting geopolitical interests triggered a war in the Donbas region. And, of course, there will be a quiz by Suzanne Hendriks.

Thursday 16 January 2020, De Roode Bioscoop, Haarlemmerplein 7, Amsterdam. Bar open 20.00h., start programme 20.30h.

Entrance 10 euros, tickets here. Entrance free for ambassadors. Please make your reservation through info@defactoborders.org.
