On Februari 20-22, De Facto teamed up with writer Adwin de Kluyver and Podium Vlieland - the cutest cinema on the Wadden island of Vlieland - to organise an Off the Map film festival. People travelled from all over the Netherlands and even from Berlin to be with us on the island for three days.

Henrik Jan HaarinkWe smoothly moved from presentations about failed island-utopias to geopolitics on the square centimeter (on stamps). And we shared stories about memorable border experiences from ourselves and from the audience. On top of that, we gave an introduction into the divided island of Cyprus and did a quiz with some fierce flagwaving. The winners (2 of them, because we had a booked-out double bill program!) took home a bag full of bordermarker-licorice.
Outside, the Vlieland flag (green-white) was waving, we had some sun and some showers. Inside we travelled from the South-Chinese Sea to Kurdistan, and from the US border, to the Galapagos islands, the Sahara and Cyprus. We pretty much covered all of the world - without flying - moving from heartfelt stories to tragic experiences and from overly ambitious islands to dormant border conflicts. Our audience turned out to be well travelled and very informed about the world. They shared with us their experiences in countries that no longer exist (East and West Germany, Yugoslavia and Nagorno Karabakh) and about borders crossed, some nearby, others far away.
We thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and look forward to be part of another edition next year - let’s see if we can make that happen. Sign up for our newsletter and keep an eye on Podium Vlieland to stay informed.
