De Facto Across the Border - Cinema #3
Green Border
Mimik, Deventer
Start at 19.30, free drink after the show. Aftertalk in Dutch.
What is the impact of borders, especially when they shift? Journalist Jorie Horsthuis will discuss this urgent theme with filmmakers, artists and experts at the series of film nights 'Across the Border', a cooperation between De Facto, MIMIK and the IJsselbiënnale. Four evenings, four films, four talks. We will zoom in on personal stories, beyond the geopolitical news.
Tonight we will talk with journalist Romy van Baarsen (Trouw, het Parool) about the humanitarian crisis at the edges of Europe. We will screen Green Border, a penetrating drama about the horrors refugees face in the forests between Belarus and Poland. By not only telling the story of the migrants, but also of a border guard, an activist and a psychologist, filmmaker Agnieszka Holland challenges us to think about one central question: what are you willing to do? After its release, the filmmaker received threats from Polish opinion makers and politicians, and soon the film caused a right-wing backlash in Poland.
Journalist Romy van Baarsen went undercover to unravel the truth about deadly, illegal pushbacks on the Mediterranean. She just returned from Poland, where she investigated how violence against migrants is becoming increasingly normalized. With her, Jorie Horsthuis will elaborate about the crisis at Europe's borders and the work of journalists that is increasingly under pressure. How far is Van Baarsen willing to go to get the truth out?
DE FACTO is a project of graphic designer Floor Koomen, journalist Jorie Horsthuis and researcher Suzanne Hendriks.
