The Principality of Hutt River, often referred to by its former name—Hutt River Province—is one of the more notorious micronations in Australia. It was founded by Leonard Casley and came out of a protest against a wheat quota by the Australian government. A few years later Casley named himself Prince Leonard in reference to a British Treason Act of 1495 as an attempt to give his claim more weight. When Prince Leonard died in February 2019, a US$2.15 million tax bill was left. This forced his son and successor, Prince Graeme Casley, to announce in August 2020 that the principality would sell its land to pay the debt. A reign of fifty years ended.

Cabinda

Cabinda is a piece of land in West Africa that lies between the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo and the Atlantic Ocean. Adjacent to its coast are some of the largest offshore oil fields in the world. Formally, it is an exclave and province of Angola, but this status has been disputed by several groups that proclaimed independence in 1975. The Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda - Forces Armadas de Cabinda (FLEC-FAC) runs an exile office in Paris.

West Papua

The Republic of West Papua is an unrecognized, proposed state on the western half of the island of New Guinea. It is home to many unique species of wildlife including tree kangaroos and birds of paradise. It is also one of the world’s most resource rich areas containing huge reserves of oil, gas, copper, gold and timber. Previously a Dutch colony along with the islands that now make up Indonesia, West Papua remained under Dutch control when the Republic of Indonesia became independent in 1949. The Dutch government began preparing West Papua for independence throughout the 1950s, and on 1 December 1961, West Papua held a Congress at which its people declared independence, and raised their new flag – the Morning Star. However, the Indonesian army took over control and killed and imprisoned thousands of Papuans. The independence struggle continues ever since.

New Utopia

New Utopia is an unclaimed plot of land in the Caribbean Sea. It lies off the Cayman islands and was started as an entrepreneurial venture by Howard Turney, who later changed his name to Prince Lazarus Long. He dreamt of a hyper-capitalist tax-haven, citing the of writings of Ayn Rand, Napoleon Hill, Robert Heinlein, Dale Carnegie, and Adam Smith as inspiration. Turnley raised $100 million twith the aim of building houses out of floating concrete but was later accused of a ‘fraudulent nationwide Internet scheme’. Turnley died in 2012, the project has recently been revived by his daughter Elizabeth Henderson, who promises to have New Utopia completed by 2021.
