The Kingdom of Sedang was created by French explorer Charles-Marie David de Mayréna in 1888. Mayréna was a former French government official who was involved in various dubious affairs including arms deals and embezzlement. He owned a plantation in French Indo-China and when the King of Siam began to claim land around the French territory, he took advantage and convinced the local tribesmen to form a small kingdom under his rule. He then offered various governments trading rights to the Kingdom but to no avail. The Kingdom perished when Mayréna died under mysterious circumstances in 1890.

Many will have heard of Englishman James Brooke, the so-called “White Rajah” who in the 1840s established the Kingdom of Sarawak, or indeed of French lawyer Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, who in 1860 founded the Mapuche Kingdom of Araucanía and Patagonia. Perhaps not so well known is the short-lived attempt in 1888-1890 by French adventurer Marie-Charles David de Mayréna to carve out an independent kingdom in the Central Highlands of Việt Nam.

Somaliland

Somaliland is a self-declared state, internationally considered to be an autonomous region of Somalia. It lies in northwestern Somalia, on the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden. After the overthrow of Somali military dictator Siad Barr, the former British protectorate declared independence in 1991. Somaliland is ranked as partly free by Freedom House, and maintains informal ties with some foreign governments. The de facto state issues its own money: the Somaliland shilling. However, Somaliland’s self-proclaimed independence remains unrecognized by any country or international organization.

Bougainville

The Autonomous Region of Bougainville, named after French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, is geographically part of the Solomon Islands archipelago, but politically of Papua New Guinea. The islands are rich in gold and copper; sources that were the cause for civil unrest. The local people complained that they were not getting their share of the benefits of the mines. In 2001, after a ten-year-long civil war between secessionists and Papua New Guinea, an autonomous Bougainville government was established, and a promise was made that the people of Bougainville could vote over independence in a referendum in 2019. The outcome was almost unanimously in favor of becoming independent. Now a long process of negotiations has started between the government of Papua New Guinea and the autonomous government of Bougainville. Creating a nation is not easy and the economic challenges this country in the making faces are not yet solved.

Užupis

Užupis is a small neighborhood in the old part of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. In 1991 Lithuania broke free from the former Soviet Union and local artists erected a monument for singer Frank Zappa, who they claimed served as an example for the inhabitants of the former satellite state. They went one step further on 1st April, 1997 when the independent Republic of Užupis was declared. “The spirit of Zappa made us see that independence from Moscow was not enough and persuaded us to declare independence from the rest of Vilnius.”
