This small strip of no man’s land in the Danube river has been part of a low intensity border dispute between Serbia and Croatia for many years. The fact that it was uninhabited and that there was no active claim inspired Vít Jedlička, a Czech right-libertarian politician, to declare The Free Republic of Liberland in 2015. There has been no diplomatic recognition of Liberland by any member of the United Nations. Serbia calls the claim ‘frivolous’ and Croatia dismisses it as ‘a joke’.

I Built My Own State and It’ll Be a Tax Haven

Some libertarians are talkers. Well, most of them. But there are doers, too. Vít Jedlička, a Czech political activist decided to take matters into his own hands and created his own state - Liberland. It’s located between Serbia and Croatia and it is still fighting for international recognition. It’s designed to be a minarchist state with as minimal government as possible. Northern Cyprus

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a de facto state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. It unilaterally declared independence in 1983, and is recognized only by Turkey. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital. Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus.

Machias Seal Island

Where the Canada-US border falls into the ocean, one final territorial dispute exists. Machias Seal Island is a 1-hectare landmass permanently inhabited by over 5,000 mating pairs of Puffins and two Canadian lighthouse keepers. The lighthouse, built in 1832, is now fully automated and the keepers reside there solely for reasons of sovereignty. The dispute stems from a disagreement interpreting a 1782 British-American peace treaty, and a 1621 Novia Scotian land grant. While the scientific community works together peacefully, granting land access to fifteen scientists per day from each side, the fishermen have already spilled blood in the ocean known as ‘The Grey Zone’. Climate change warms the waters, increasing in tandem the population of lobsters and rival fishermen. But when the sea warms up further, the lobsters will move elsewhere, leaving thus an inflated number of boats floating around the island.

Elgaland-Vargaland

Elgaland-Vargaland is a project by Swedish artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Leif Elggren. The country claims 'all border territories between all countries on earth, and all areas (up to a width of 10 nautical miles) outside all countries territorial waters’. They also claim the 'mental and perceptive territories such as the Hypnagogue State (civil), the Escapistic Territory (civil) and the Virtual Room (digital)’—thereby questioning all existing borders.
