Elgaland-Vargaland is a project by Swedish artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff and Leif Elggren. The country claims 'all border territories between all countries on earth, and all areas (up to a width of 10 nautical miles) outside all countries territorial waters’. They also claim the 'mental and perceptive territories such as the Hypnagogue State (civil), the Escapistic Territory (civil) and the Virtual Room (digital)’—thereby questioning all existing borders.

Northern Cyprus

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (Turkish: Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti), is a de facto state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. It unilaterally declared independence in 1983, and is recognized only by Turkey. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital. Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong, officially the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China (HKSAR), is a city and administrative region in southern China. In the fallout from the first Opium War in 1842, the island of Hong Kong was ceded to the British empire who was later granted the ‘New Territories’ in the north on a ninety-nine year lease in 1898. Upon the expiration of this lease, the entire territory was returned to China with a degree of autonomy guaranteed for fifty years under the principle of ‘one country, two systems’. However, since the 1997 handover, this autonomy has been eroded faster than predicted, a process that has only quickened since the widespread protests of 2019. Although support for independence is low (20% in 2020), public support for a more democratic political system and for greater autonomy from China remains high.

Boon Island

The Republic of Boon Island declared its independence on 1st April 2003, in an effort to raise funds to restore and maintain the remote lighthouse off the coast of Maine. ‘Every political and government office for the new Republic is for sale—for the right price’, the self proclaimed regent of the new republic Tim Harrison said to reporters. ‘We are a corrupt government, but we are corrupt for the benefit of the people and for the people.’ Citizenship was available to anyone who was willing to pay the $25.00 fee. In 2014, the lighthouse was sold to a real estate developer.
