Hakkelaarsbrug is a hamlet in the Netherlands, part of the municipality of Gooise Meren. It has approximately 100 inhabitants and consists of two streets, the Googweg and Naarderstraatweg, and a drawbridge. When complaints to the local government about never-ending construction works fell on deaf ears, one of the inhabitants decided to take action: on 22 July 2017, Cees van Apeldoorn declared the independence of the Free Republic of Hakkelaarsbrug. The micronation has a passport, banknotes, postage stamps, its own flag and a national anthem. It also has its own White House where meetings are held. However, there are no political parties—in fact, politics are banned completely.

Puntland

Puntland is a region in Northeastern Somalia, its leaders declared independence in 1998. Internationally, it is recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia. Puntland has long been the epicenter of piracy networks in the Gulf of Aden. In 2009, Puntland MPs introduced a new state flag consisting of blue, green and white horizontal stripes—the white stripe in the centre represents peace and stability in the region. Puntland has 1600 km of coastline, which is abundant with fish and other natural marine resources. Additional economic products and activities of the region include livestock, frankincense, myrrh, gum arabic, manufacturing and agriculture.

Kosovo

Kosovo is a partially recognized state in Southeastern Europe. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008, after the war in 1999 and the transitional administration of the United Nations (UNMIK). Kosovo has been recognized by 50% of UN member states, among which the United States and most EU-countries. However, there is also a strong opposition against Kosovo independence, not only expressed by Serbia but also by Russia, China and Spain. The Kosovo Serb majority in the northern part of Kosovo refuses to be part of this new country, and largely functions independently from its institutions. The Ibar River, running through the city of Mitrovica, marks the dividing line. Recently, there are talks about an ethnic land swap: Serbia getting the North, and Kosovo annexing Preševo Valley. This proposal is highly debated, both in the region and in the EU. Critics say it will have a negative spillover effect on other parts of the Balkans and could lead to new wars.

Calexit

The Independent Republic of California, referred to as ‘Calexit’, is a proposal by the Yes California Independence Campaign. The political action committee promotes the secession of the state of California from the United States. Even though it is far from becoming a reality, it has a ‘people’s embassy’ in Moscow. The campaign became controversial in 2017 when its president, Louis Marinelli, was reported to have received significant assistance from Russia to promote his efforts.
